California Native Plants with Instructor Stew Winchester

Stew Winchester teaches horticulture courses and field identification of California native plants. These courses are intended for landscape professionals and focus on the study of California plant communities and the environments that shape them.

Summer Alpines Field Course

This course is designed to acquaint the landscape design student with the dominant and typical plant constituents of each vegetation unit in California, focusing primarily on those native species currently used in the nursery industry. Habitat, soil, and climatic factors are discussed in relationship with the plant species established in both their natural and horticultural environment. Courses often include student participation in multi-day field trips to select California vegetation environments to observe and record relevant plant and habitat data.
